PREFACE

This essay was composed for the English D-course, which I attended in 1997. I wish to thank the teachers of the course for their inspiration in its composition. Especially, I would like to direct my gratitude to Gunnar Persson, my supervisor, for his patient assistance and clever advice - without which this essay would have never seen the light of day. Further, I would like to thank Peter Svanberg for his assistance and Catherine Norberg and Meirion Hughes for their relevant comments. In the sci.lang newsgroup on the Internet I met Larry Selinker, linguistics professor at the University of London, and Jim Tyson, who both assisted me along the way. Thank you!
